Let The Debate Begin

Cross-posted from The Stupid Shall Be Punished:

Seeing as how today is the 107th birthday of the Submarine Force, I figured it was time once and for all to settle a debate that's been raging for years: Which is the "official unofficial" game of submariners -- Cribbage or Uckers?

I've always been a cribbage man myself, but it could be because that's what the officers play. While Uckers is more often associated with the Brits, I remember seeing at least as much Uckers being played in Crew's Mess on my boats as cribbage. Cribbage seems to have a larger part in submarine mythology, mostly because of the intensity with which it was played on USS Wahoo.

So what do you think -- what is the game that you most closely associate with submarining? Is it cribbage or Uckers? Or is it something else, like poker?

And Happy Birthday to all U.S. Submariners!

Whatever happened to Acey Deucy? I was on the boats in the early to late 60's, and someone was always playing that game, as well as poker.

I started playing Euchre in the 7th Grade, so it is a game that I love and always will.

That said, it was my experience that Cribbage was/is the official unofficial game of submariners, and I have fond memories of playing with the XO at sea and with my roommate (also a submariner) when in port. Also a great game.

I'm just thrilled that card playing--poker, etc--has reinstituted among the younger generation. Many of my students and younger colleagues are avid poker players.

Now, could somebody please teach me to play Bridge!!!??? There's gotta be a website where you can watch/learn/play!

Acey-Deucey, the board was imprinted on the crew's mess tables aboard the 575.

Never heard of uckers.

Cribbage was played but not as much as Spades, Hearts, or Old Maid.

on my boat, uss nevada ssbn 733, all we played was spades, then eucher, then cribbage and poker. playstation and x-box has taken over a little bit and with the portable dvd players that people set up in their racks, most guys get off watch and then go to the rack and play some ps2 or x-box, hit the patrol sock, and go to sleep. withthe way some COBs are acting and not allowing movies to be viewed in teh lounge, people just rather go to the rack, there is a lot of the comradery going away. but we still always played spades as much as possible. especially during the the extreemly long manuevering watches. why have a small boat handling party if u never use it?

must be a lot of boomer sailors, on fast attacks, there isn't much time for cards. something is always broke, drills, gmt, battery charges, evolutions etc. And during the maneuvering watch? are you serious? everyone is busy. most cob's and xo's say if you have time to lean, you have time to clean.
